About Paper on Skin

Paper on Skin™ is a biennial event which originated in the city of Burnie. It was an initiative of the Burnie Arts Council, driven by renowned paper artist, Pam Thorne.

For many decades a pulp and papermaking factory was the city’s key industry. While the factory no longer exists, the love of paper lives on in the cultural life of the area.

Entries must be made from at least 80% paper, presenting a unique challenge for participating artists. The competition is not themed, allowing entrants to explore their passions and develop pieces around specific areas of interest.

Paper on Skin™ involves a suite of activities including the competition, gala event, exhibition and workshops.

In 2020, due to COVID, a film version was made. This proved to be a successful means of sharing the wonder of the wearable creations with the world. The Paper on Skin™ films are now an unmissable component of the Paper on Skin™ experience.

The gala parade delivers not only a feast of extraordinary living artworks, but also a diverse array of stories. The audience are wowed not only by the visual display, but also the depth of meaning carried by the pieces.

Marking the tenth anniversary of the event, in 2022 Paper on Skin™ relocated to the state’s gateway city of Devonport. Devonport City Council is the Major Partner and host of Paper on Skin™.

The event embodies the region’s transformation, shifting from heavy industry to a destination celebrating innovation, sustainable enterprise, food, culture, and the arts.

Paper on Skin™ draws together the past and the future, reflecting and respecting a sense of place, whist inviting and inspiring innovation and beauty.
