Helen Hiebert Workshops
Workshops are at capacity - JOIN WAITLIST
We are thrilled to announce US-based master papermaker and paper artist Helen Hiebert as our international tutor for Paper on Skin™ 2024.
Helen is a Colorado artist who constructs installations, sculptures, films, artists’ books and works in paper using handmade paper as her primary medium. She teaches, lectures and exhibits her work internationally and online, and is the author of the several how-to books about papermaking and papercrafts.
Helen has an extensive network of paper colleagues around the world, and her interest in how things are made (from paper) keeps her up-to-date on current paper trends, which she writes about in her weekly blog called The Sunday Paper. She interviews papermakers and paper artists on her podcast Paper Talk, and she holds papermaking master classes in her Red Cliff studio.
Helen was last in Tasmania for the 2009 IAPMA conference, held in Burnie. Paper on Skin did not yet exist at that time, so she is excited to be returning to a community where the passion for ‘all things paper’ has grown during the intervening years.
Helen will also be a guest judge for the Awagami Paper Award.

FAQs
Level of Experience: Some experience with paper manipulation or similar creative practice (textile art, printmaking, craft) is recommended. Please inquire if you are unsure. More experienced practitioners will be encouraged, under Helen’s guidance, to experiment and challenge their existing skills.
Are the workshops just for wearable art artists? No. Whilst Helen has selected the techniques for their relevance to the creation of garments and how they may be applied to wearables, they are also wonderful skills for anyone interested in exploring the medium of paper.
Materials: Helen has designed the workshop around the use of specific, high quality, washi paper. It will be supplied and is covered by the materials cost incorporated into the workshop fee. Prior to the workshops recipients will receive a supply list from Helen with tools, ancillary materials and equipment she recommends participants bring along.
Do I get to take something home? Yes indeed! The treasures you create will be yours to keep. This is why Helen has put a lot of consideration into the type of paper we will be using as the base material for the workshop activities/techniques.
Is the workshop catered for? No. RANT Arts is located in the Devonport CBD and is close to ample choices for lunch. Tea and coffee will be available.
Are places limited? Yes! Whilst Helen is travelling a loooooong way to deliver three days of workshops, she also wants to be able to provide personalised attention. Numbers will be strictly capped. Book early to avoid missing out! EDIT - the workshops booked out withing a few days of opening. If you wish to be placed on a waiting list, email workshopspaperdevonport@gmail.com and indicate which workshop you wish to attend.
I have only paid a deposit, when is the balance due? An invoice will be issued via email and payment will be required by 16th September, 2024. Failure to pay in full by this date may result in a loss of place in the workshop.
PayPal declining your payment? If your payment was declined due to an ‘international regulations’ error you will need to contact PayPal customer support. Apparently you need to verify the PayPal account with compliance - contact PayPal at 02-8223-9500 from a mobile device or 1800-073-263 from a landline between 8 AM - 8 PM Aus time. Another option is to pay using a credit card (you will be prompted to do this as a ‘guest).’ It is best to use the same credit card that is normally linked to your PayPal account.
You can also Direct Deposit into our bank account. Details above.
